HC Deb 11 June 1855 vol 138 c1783
MR. GRANVILLE VERNON

said, he begged to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether the appointment of the Dean of Christ Church has been made subject to any conditions or alterations as to emoluments, or otherwise, which may be recommended by the Oxford University Commissioners?

VISCOUNT PALMERSTON

said, the Commissioners had the power of making such regulations as they thought proper, and having recommended to the Crown a gentleman whom he considered eminently fitted for the position, and one who was imbued with the right principles of improvement, he did not think it proper to exact from him any condition as to the course which he ought to pursue. He was quite satisfied that that gentleman would be most anxious to concur in any measures which might be suggested for the improvement of the University of Oxford.
