HC Deb 08 April 1853 vol 125 cc803-4
SIR BENJAMIN HALL

I wish to put a question to the noble Lord the Member for the City of London. The noble Lord will recollect that I gave notice that it was my intention to move for leave to bring in a Bill to reform the Corporation of London. It appears by the public papers that immediately after that notice was given, a meeting was held in the City of London, and a Committee was appointed to make a report upon the subject. I wish to ask the noble Lord if any communication has been received by the Government from the corporate body of London; and whether it is the intention of the Government to take any steps with the view of inquiring, by commission or otherwise, into the state of the Corporation of London, for the purpose of bringing in a Bill to reform that corporation? If the noble Lord's answer be in the affirmative, of course it will not be necessary for me to introduce a Bill.

LORD JOHN RUSSELL

The Corporation of the City of London has not made any communication to the Government on this subject. It is the intention of the Government to appoint, very soon, a Commission for the purpose of considering the propositions for the reform of the Corporation of the City of London, and to prepare a measure upon that subject.
