HC Deb 31 May 1849 vol 105 c1027

The House resolved itself into Committee on this Bill. The remaining clauses were agreed to, with some Amendments.

MR. LACY

then proposed that the following proviso be added to the 7th Clause:— And be it enacted. That it shall not be lawful for any archbishop or bishop of the United Church of England and Ireland to re-ordain, grant letters of orders to, or again admit to holy orders, any person so having been relieved by sentence of deposition from holy orders, as aforesaid.

MR. BOUVERIE

objected to it as being altogether unnecessary. According to the ecclesiastical law there could not be a second ordination. A person might be restored as a clergyman without being re-ordained. All that the Bill did was to allow the suspension of a clergyman from the performance of his functions.

After a few observations from MR. LACY, the clause was withdrawn.

The House resumed. Bill reported.

The House adjourned at a quarter after Nine o'clock.
