The family had been left in a state of beggary, contrary to the assurance given by the right hon. Baronet the Member for Tamworth.
§ SIR J. C. HOBHOUSEsaid, the reason why money had not been given to them was, that the widow of the Rajah refused to receive it until his adopted son should be recognised as his heir. It was offered by the Governor General, and it was refused on that ground.
