HC Deb 18 April 1848 vol 98 cc452-3

In answer to MR. G. A. HAMILTON,

SIR G. GREY said, it was quite true that an armed association had been enrolled in Dublin, with the view of preserving the peace and of protecting the lives, liberties, and property of the people. The association had placed themselves at the disposal of His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant, by whom their services had been accepted. He was happy to say, that, amongst the gentlemen who had waited upon the Lord Lieutenant as a deputation upon this subject, two were Roman Catholics, and four were gentlemen professing what were generally termed "liberal politics." He need hardly add, that armed associations were not legal unless they received the direct sanction of the Crown.
