§ On the Motion that the House go into Committee on the Turnpike Roads (Scotland) Bill,
§ Mr. P. M. Stewartdefended the Bill. It had been fully discussed in the other House, and it had received the sanction and support of the principal Scotch authorities.
Mr. Forbes Mackenziewas of opinion that toll-houses ought to have the privilege of supplying refreshments, as had hitherto been the custom, otherwise great injury would be inflicted on the toll trusts.
The House divided on the Question, that the words proposed to be left out stand part of the Question:—Ayes 16; Noes 42: Majority 26.
§ Main Question, as amended, agreed to. Bill put off for three months.
