§ Mr. Ewartwished to ask a question of the noble Lord the Secretary of State for the Colonies. It had been the custom of some of the colonial governments to issue bounty orders for the encouragement of emigration. These orders had been recently suspended, and he wished to ask whether it was intended, that these orders should be renewed or permanently discontinued?
Lord Stanleywas understood to say, 748 that this was a matter more particularly resting with the colonial governments themselves, and that recent experience had led them to doubt, whether they should not introduce some important modifications into the present system. An inquiry had been instituted into the subject, but the result was not yet known.
Lord Stanley; According to the last accounts he understood, that a great difference of opinion existed upon the subject.
