HC Deb 27 February 1843 vol 66 cc1339-40
Mr. Ewart

asked the right hon. Baronet whether the attention of the Government had been attracted to the manner in which the export duties at Ceylon were collected, especially with respect to the duty on the article cinnamon?

Sir R. Peel

said, the subject had been under the consideration of the Government, and he thought that the duty gene- rally on all articles of export, with the exception of a few, was 2½ per cent, ad valorem. Among the excepted articles were cinnamon and cinnamon oil. Representations had been made by persons in this country as to the advantages of reducing the export duty on cinnamon, and authority had been given by the Government here to the authorities in Ceylon to reduce the duty from 2s. to 1s. A corresponding reduction was also about to be made on the article of cinnamon oil from 1s. to 4½d.
