Mr. Powellbegged to ask the noble Lord, the Secretary for Ireland, whether it were in the contemplation of Government to propose any measure for the reconstruction of the Irish Grand Jury Law, and also whether (as we understood) persons appointed in the interim would be so appointed with a full knowledge that their services might afterwards be dispensed with in the event of the existing offices being abolished.
§ Lord Eliotsaid, it was impossible for him to give a satisfactory answer to the former question, as her Majesty's Government were not yet in possession of the report of the commissioners who had been appointed to inquire into the subject. With respect to the second question, however, he could certainly inform the hon. Member that any person hereafter appointed to vacancies under the existing system would receive his appointment with a distinct understanding that he was liable to be called on to vacate it, should the Legislature decide on its abolition.
