§ Mr. Laboucheresaid, it was his intention to introduce certain modifications in the new schedule of duties which he would bring forward in the customs resolutions on Monday next. When he had originally proposed these resolutions he stated, that be was not 753 only ready, but that it would be his duty, if anything arose in the course of his conferences with the various branches of trade which might be affected, to make certain modifications in these duties before they were finally discussed and decided upon in the House. The modifications he now proposed would be, that instead of a differential duty of 10 per cent.,ad valorem, upon all foreign goods imported into the colonies, he proposed a duly of 7 per cent,ad valorem. With regard to shingles, instead of a duty of 3s. 6d. per thousand, he proposed a duty of 2s. per thousand; and, instead of a; duty of 10s. 6d. the thousand feet upon pitch pine and other timber, he proposed a duty of 7s. He should take care that these modifications should be printed in an: amended schedule, and circulated among the Members of the House as soon as possible, in order that they might have them in a proper form, before he moved the resolutions in the House.
§ Mr. Goulburnsaid, it was important that not only the Members of the House, but persons engaged in trade should be apprised of these resolutions before they were brought forward.
