HC Deb 22 January 1840 vol 51 c421
Colonel Conolly

wished to know whether it was the intention of the Government to propose the repeal of the Scotch Malt Drawback during the present Session.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer

said, it was a matter of great inconvenience to have questions put to the Government in reference to trade, as it was calculated to create alarm in the minds of those interested, and therefore, as a general rule, he had a great objection to answer such questions. In the present instance, however, he had no objection to state, that from information he had received from the Chief Commissioner of Excise relative to the Scotch Malt Drawback, he should not this year be prepared to introduce a measure for the repeal it.
