§ On the motion of Mr. Tooke, the adjourned debate on this subject was resumed.
§ The Solicitor-Generalwished before the House divided, to state in a few words his objection to the present proposition. He could see no possibility of drawing a line in any other mode than this — that the individual who should receive a direct pecuniary interest in the private business of the House, should be excluded; but that he who did not, should not be excluded. The distinction which the hon. Member wished to make, was too subtle and fine, and would only shift the difficulty to some other case not precisely similar to that of his (the Solicitor-General's) hon. Colleague, the Member for Penryn (Mr. Freshfield). For himself, he certainly was not disposed to differ from the hon. Member for Bath on this subject, in thinking that there should be no line drawn; but, at all events, he was opposed to that which was now attempted to be drawn by the hon. Member's motion.
§ The House divided on the resolution: — Ayes 52; Noes 54: Majority 2.
