HC Deb 15 March 1832 vol 11 cc242-3
Mr. Wilks

presented a Petition from certain inhabitants of the city of London, praying that the space now left open in front of the Monument might be preserved from any future building, and might be enclosed and planted in the manner of a square. The petitioners contended, that the health of the City required as many open spaces as could be spared, and that to preserve the area referred to would secure an advantageous approach to the New London Bridge; and the petitioners further prayed, that the London Bridge Bill might not pass without a clause for carrying into effect the object for which they prayed.

Mr. Alderman Wood

observed, that the petitioners had had a full opportunity of appearing before the Committee, and proving the value of the improvement they suggested, and the amount which it would cost; he really thought that a good wide street would answer all reasonable purposes in that part of the Metropolis.
