§ Sir George Clerkbrought up the Report of the Committee appointed to examine the petition against the return made by the Jedburgh District of Burghs. The report stated, that Robert Steuart, Esq. was not duly elected, and ought not to have been returned to serve in Parliament for the burghs; that. Sir Adolphus John Dalrymple, Bart., was duly elected, and should have been returned; that no person appeared before the Committee on behalf of Robert Steuart, Esq.; that the petition was not frivolous or vexatious; that the conduct of Robert Steuart, Esq., was vexatious, his return having been attended by a gross violation of the public peace; and also in having sanctioned the forcible abduction of one of the voters, so as to prevent him from voting.—The return to be amended accordingly.
