HC Deb 15 March 1830 vol 23 cc363-4

Mr. Slaney moved the second reading of the Poor Law Amendment bill.

Mr. Benett

thought that the present was not a fit time for interfering with the relief which was legally administered to the poor. He would therefore suggest, that the Bill proposed should be withdrawn for at least another year. At all events, no person could deem it expedient to enter on a discussion of the subject at so unseasonable an hour.

Lord Althorp

recommended that the Bill should be then read a second time, pro forma, with the understanding that its principle should be discussed when the Speaker was about to leave the Chair, in order that the House might resolve itself into committee.

Bill read a second time.
