HC Deb 09 April 1804 vol 22 c1581
SIR G. BADEN-POWELL

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can now state the decision arrived at by Her Majesty's Government in reference to the request for a dissolution made to the Governor of Newfoundland by the present Ministers of that Colony?

MR. S. BUXTON

The Governor of Newfoundland is still in communication with his Ministers on the subject of the political crisis that has arisen.

SIR C. W. DILKE (Gloucester, Forest of Dean)

Does the hon. Gentleman mean to say the Governor is directed to take the advice of the responsiblo Ministors in this matter, seeing that they are the gentlemen whose conduct is now under trial?

MR. S. BUXTON

But as in all self-Governing Bodies the responsible advisers of the Governor are the Ministers until they retire he is bound to take their advice, although he may not follow it.
