HC Deb 21 October 1943 vol 392 cc1513-4
47. Sir Irving Albery

asked the Prime Minister whether his attention has been drawn to the urgent need for a further consideration of an issue of uniform upon agreed conditions to officers and cadets of the girls' pre-service training units; and whether, in view of the multiplicity of departments involved, he will immediately set up some interdepartmental machinery to decide this question?

The Prime Minister

As regards the first part of the Question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given to Questions on this subject by my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade on 12th October, a copy of which I am sending him. As regards the second part of the Question, I do not think any purpose would be served by setting up special machinery as suggested.

Sir H. Williams

As girls' units are performing precisely the same service in relation to women's services as boys are to the men's, why is there discrimination in favour of boys as against girls?

Sir I. Albery

Will the right hon. Gentleman also consider that undoubtedly many potential recruits of a desirable kind are prevented from joining?
