HC Deb 19 November 1940 vol 365 c1803
8. Mr. Quintin Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for War upon what date the military authorities first received representations from the Ministry of Health regarding the continued use of a cinema at present occupied by evacuees; what is the reason for the delay in coming to a decision; and whether he is aware that, as a result of this delay, 700 persons have been compelled to live in a single building, without beds or proper accommodation, for upwards of two months?

The Secretary of State for War (Mr. Eden)

Representations were first received orally from the Ministry of Health on or about 8th October. The position, so far as my Department is concerned, is that the cinema had been earmarked for military purposes, and was required for occupation by troops. In view of the urgent need for the accommodation of evacuees, I am arranging for its release for this purpose.
