HC Deb 30 April 1907 vol 173 c688
MR. SUMMERBELL (Sunderland)

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies if he is aware that the duty on Swedish matches entering Trinidad has been reduced from sixty cents per gross to thirty-six cents per gross, amounting in a loss to general revenue of £2,000; and whether, in view of the effect of such reduction upon the local match industry at Port of Spain, employing some eighty people, he proposes to take any action in the matter.

MR. CHURCHILL

The revision of the Trinidad tariff has recently been under consideration, but the Secretary of state is not yet aware what alterations are proposed. He understands, however, that they are expected to result in an increase of revenue; and it is possible that they may include a reduction of the import duty on matches.
