§ MR. PUGHasked the Secretary of State for India, What steps Her Majesty's Government have taken, or propose to take, in view of the uncertainty of the figures of the last Indian Budget, to ascertain correctly the actual state of the finances of India?
THE MARQUESS OF HARTINGTON, in reply, said, he was not aware that there was any uncertainty with respect to the figures of the last Indian Budget save in so far as related to the expenses of the Afghan War. The Indian Government had promised to make inquiry with the view of sending home a more accurate estimate on the subject, and when the information arrived he should be in a better position to state what further measures, if any, it might be desirable to take for the purpose of ascertaining the actual state of the finances of India.
