HC Deb 07 August 1866 vol 184 cc2137-8
CAPTAIN GRIDLEY

said, he wished to ask the First Commissioner of Works, If he will direct his attention to the mutilated condition of some of the public Monuments in St. Paul's Cathedral (particularly those of Admiral Lord Rodney, General Sir William Ponsonby, and General Hay), with the view to their reparation?

LORD JOHN MANNERS

said, in reply, that the Question of the hon. and gallant Gentleman assumed that the public monuments in St. Paul's Cathedral were under the charge of the Office of Works. He had made inquiries, but he had not been able to find anything in the archives of the Office which would show that such was the case. He would, however, make further inquiry, and if it should turn out that the monuments in St. Paul's Cathedral were under the charge of the Office of Works, undoubtedly he should direct his attention to those monuments which were so far mutilated as to require reparation.

CAPTAIN GRIDLEY

said, he would beg to ask the noble Lord, whether, in the event of its appearing that this was a matter not within the jurisdiction of the First Commissioner of Works, he would call the attention of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's to the state of those monuments, which were a national disgrace?

LORD JOHN MANNERS

was understood to say that he did not think it was for him to call upon the Dean and Chapter. He could not give an answer to that question.
