• Originally formed as Mechanics Institute in 1824; then Manchester College of Science and Technology in 1956; UMIST in 1966 and separate from the Victoria University of Manchester in 1993. On 01.10.04 amalgamated with Manchester University to form new single institution titled University of Manchester. Legal title was Victoria University of Manchester until revoked under University of Manchester Act 2004.
