HC Deb 28 May 2004 vol 422 c31W
Barbara Follett

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what proportion of the Medical Research Council's 2004–05 funding is devoted to stem cell and embryonic research. [176084]

Ms Hewitt

The MRC received £26 million of the £40 million made available by the Government in the 2002 spending review for research into stem cells. £12.6 million has been awarded so far. Other embryonic and/or stem cell research may also be supported by MRC via responsive mode funding during 2004–05.

It is not possible to calculate what proportion of the Council's income will be spent on any area of research as MRC has not yet made all the funding decisions for 2004–05.
