HC Deb 29 October 2002 vol 391 c718W
Mr. Laws

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills (1) what his estimate is of the average expenditure on(a) secondary school places per pupil in the state sector and (b) secondary school places per day pupil in the independent sector; and if he will make a statement; [75255]

(2) what his estimate is of the total local and national government expenditure, per pupil, in state secondary schools in 2001–02; and if he will make a statement. [76547]

Mr. Miliband

[holding answer 24 October 2002]: For the state sector, the estimated average recurrent expenditure funded by central and local government in 2001–02 was £3,600 per pupil. Independent Schools Council figures suggest a private school recurrent spending figure of £5,400 per annum. Some caution is needed in making detailed comparisons between the sectors as it is not easy to calculate per pupil funding exactly on a like-for-like basis.
