HL Deb 07 November 2002 vol 640 c146WA
Baroness Byford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to the current outbreak of salmonella and the deaths of two people, when they will ensure that food processors are compelled to use raw materials produced to United Kingdom Health and Safety standards. [HL6245]

Lord Hunt of Kings Heath:

Food processors in the United Kingdom must comply with the Food Safety Act 1990 and food safety regulations made under it. Food processors are responsible for ensuring that food supplied is fit for its intended purpose.

Local authorities monitor compliance with these requirements. Formal action may be taken against food processors in the event of non-compliance. General advice may also be given on related matters or about particular concerns, for example, by reiterating advice from the Food Standards Agency about use and consumption of various food commodities.
