To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills how many classroom assistants are employed in primary schools in England and Wales; and what proportion have formal qualifications. [8829]

In January 2001 there were 63,176 full-time equivalent teaching assistants employed in maintained primary schools in England. Information on formal qualifications of teaching assistants is not collected centrally.
