HC Deb 26 November 2001 vol 375 c700W
Mr. Hoyle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police specials are working in the police service. [15163]

Mr. Denham

The number of serving special constables in England and Wales as at 31 March 2001 is 12,738.

The Government are committed to increasing the Special Constabulary and we are looking at radical improvements in their management, welfare and deployment as part of the police reform process.
