Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list for each police force area, for each of the last 10 years, the average time from arrest to sentence of persistent young offenders. [140647]

Jane Kennedy

I have been asked to reply.

Arrest to sentence times for persistent young offenders in England and Wales are available from 1996 only, and by police force area from 1997 only. Arrest to sentence times by police force area can be found in the Lord Chancellor's Department Press Notice (issue 154–99–table 2) for 1997 and 1998 and the Lord Chancellor's Department Statistical Bulletin (issue 3/2000–table 2) for 1999 and the first two quarters of 2000. Copies have been placed in the House of Commons Library.

Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people are in custody in each youth offenders' institution broken down by the counties, county boroughs and boroughs from which they come; and what percentage of them come from homes which are over 100 miles away from the institution concerned. [141174]

Mr. Boateng

I will write to my hon. Friend as soon as possible, and place a copy of the letter in the Library.
