HC Deb 24 January 2000 vol 343 c123W
Mr. Fearn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions (1) what is the maximum distance a tourism site may be from a brown tourist attraction sign on a motorway; [105135]

(2) if he will increase the maximum distance a tourism site may be from its brown motorway sign. [105136]

Mr. Hill

Guidelines for signing on motorways in England specify that an attraction should be within 20 miles of the junction from which it is to be signed. Stricter criteria relating to driving time rather than distance apply on the M25 and roads within it. Signs not meeting the criteria may exceptionally be permitted if justified by special local circumstances.
