HL Deb 20 December 2000 vol 620 c59WA
The Earl of Northesk

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How they intend to respond to the submission entitled Looking to the Future made to the Home Office by the National Criminal Intelligence Service. [HL145]

Lord Bassam of Brighton:

The Government are considering the arguments of the National Criminal Intelligence Service about the mandatory retention of communications data. We have no plans to introduce legislation in the near future. The issue needs to be examined in the context of detailed consultation with all relevant interests and a consideration of current European practice.
