The amount spent on external consultants and advisers by Northern Ireland Department and the Northern Ireland Office in each of the last four financial years is as follows:

• 1995–96: £13,496,067
• 1996–97: £10,781,752
• 1997–98: £10,855,484
• 1998–99: £11,290,736.
