HC Deb 02 November 1999 vol 337 c120W
18. Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent representations he has made to the Government of Indonesia concerning human rights. [95049]

Mr. Battle

I visited Indonesia from 6-9 September and raised human rights issues with the then President and Foreign Minister. We remain concerned about the overall human rights situation in Indonesia. But we are greatly encouraged by the inauguration of Indonesia's first ever democratically elected President on 20 October and the decision to drop Indonesia's claim on East Timor. We stand ready to offer support to President Wahid's new Government during Indonesia's transition to democracy and full respect for human rights.
