HL Deb 24 May 1999 vol 601 cc68-9WA
Lord Lester of Herne Hill

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to the statement by the Lord Williams of Mostyn on 13 May (HL Deb, cols. 1289–90), whether they envisage that the proposed Joint Committee on Human Rights will be able to conduct enquiries into (a) the case for and against the ratification by the United Kingdom of international human rights treaties and protocols; and (b) the reports made on behalf of the United Kingdom to the human rights treaty bodies, and the recommendations made to the United Kingdom by those bodies. [HL2515]

Lord Williams of Mostyn

The terms of reference for the Joint Committee have yet to be finalised and proposed to both Houses. On the face of it, the matters referred to by the noble Lord could be considered by the committee.
