HL Deb 20 May 1999 vol 601 c57WA
Lord Walton of Detchant

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they support the proposal set out in the report of the Working Party of the Royal College of Surgeons of England on Organ Transplantation that a national transplant service should be established. [HL2534]

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Hayman)

We are grateful to the Royal College of Surgeons for the work done by the working party in producing the report. Its proposals are being taken into account in the current review of the United Kingdom Transplant Support Service Authority. This review is wide-ranging and will be determining what central support is needed in transplant services throughout the United Kingdom, including the issue of organ procurement and how this is best delivered. Until that review is completed we are not in a position to comment on the proposal for a national transplant service.
