HC Deb 23 March 1999 vol 328 c164W
Mr. Beith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what was the total expenditure of police cameras per force in each of the last three years; what was the average number of fines issued per camera in each police force; and if he will make a statement; [77306]

(2) how many police cameras were in use in each police force on the last date for which figures are available and in each of the previous three years; and if he will make a statement. [77290]

Mr. Boateng

The information requested is not available centrally. Road traffic law enforcement is an operational matter for individual chief officers of police and they decide whether to employ such technology in the light of their local conditions and policing priorities. The 1996 Police Research Group paper "Cost benefit analysis of traffic light and speed cameras" provides a snapshot of the numbers of sites and costs for such cameras in service with ten forces at that time. A copy is in the Library.
