To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the cost of clinical negligence claims to the NHS in(a) each region and (b) each NHS trust in each year since 1994–95. [77136]

The cost of clinical negligence claims to the NHS for each Health Board area including NHS Trusts since 1994–95 is set out in the table.

The information has been aggregated at Health Board level to protect patient confidentiality at Trusts where only one, or very few, claims have been settled. Similarly, Health Boards which have only a small number of claims have been aggregated to protect patient confidentiality.

From 1 July 1999 this will be a matter for the Scottish Parliament.
