Mr. Mullin

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Government of Turkey regarding(a) the treatment in detention. of and (b) a fair trial for the Kurdish leader Mr. Öcalan; and if he will make a statement. [76128]

Ms Quin

We have made clear to the Turkish authorities the importance we attach to the trial of Mr. Öcalan being conducted in strict accordance with the rule of law and due process. We have asked that members of the British Embassy be allowed to attend the trial. We remain opposed to the use of the death penalty under any circumstances.

We welcome the public assurances by the Turkish authorities that Mr. Öcalan will receive a fair trial, and that he will be well treated in detention.
