Mrs. Laing

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what the level of primary education funding was per primary school pupil in(a) cash terms and (b) 1998–99 prices in each year since 1992 in each local authority area. [74544]

Mrs. Liddell

The information is given in the tables. 1996–97 is the latest financial year for actual expenditure information is currently available. The figures, which are derived from local authority returns, do not include the cost of home-to-school transport, school meals, education authority central administration costs and loan charges.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many primary school classes there were in Scotland in(a) 1996, (b) 1997 and (c) 1998. [74981]

Mrs. Liddell

There were 17,731 classes in publicly funded primary schools in Scotland in 1997. Of these, 13,052 were single-stage classes and 4,679 were composite classes. The information requested was not collected in 1996 and information for 1998 is not yet available.

From 1 July 1999 this will be a matter for the Scottish Parliament.
