To ask the Secretary of State for Health what amounts were spent by(a) social services and (b) the NHS on providing mental health care through voluntary organisations and small independent service providers in the Warrington, North constituency for each of the past five years. [73762]

Information is not available by constituency for social services or National Health Service expenditure for mental health provision in the voluntary and private sector. Information on social services expenditure is available only for the Warrington Social Services Department, from its institution in April 1998, and Cheshire Social Services Department for the four years 1995–96 to 1998–99, and this is given. The NHS information given is the expenditure by North Cheshire Health Authority on mental health provision in the voluntary and private sector for the whole of Warrington for the five years 1994–95 to 1998–99.

The total mental health spend by health authority is attached and this includes expenditure on National Health Service community mental health services. Owing to health authority boundary/population changes in the North West region, consistent information is available only for the years 1997–98 and 1996–97.

Figures are not available for mental health provision through voluntary organisations and small independent service providers.

In 1997–98, the latest year for which information is available, £2,767 million was spent on the purchase of mental illness healthcare in England including £23.6 million by Gloucestershire Health Authority.
