To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what priority she gives to the education of women in poor countries in the distribution of her aid budget. [85988]

Our education policy is focused on the achievement of the internationally agreed target of universal primary education by 2015 and gender equity in primary and secondary education by 2005. These are the two major benchmarks against which we will measure our progress.

Education is a basic human right for all children. There is also clear evidence that the education of girls, and women, leads to major improvements in family health, child survival and overall economic development.
