To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) when he plans to end the system of quarantine for animals arriving in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement; [91995]

(2) if he will make a statement on the means by which he will introduce pet passports. [91996]

[holding answers 21 July 1999]: My right hon. Friend the Minister announced the Government's plans to reform the rabies quarantine rules on 26 March 1999, Official Report, columns 649-60. The new arrangements will be brought into operation by April 2001, with a pilot scheme as soon as possible (and in any event by April 2000). We will give more details in the near future.
