HC Deb 27 July 1999 vol 336 cc184-5W
Mr. Nigel Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what progress has been made since 1 May 1997 in reducing the size of infant classes in Gloucestershire. [93138]

Ms Estelle Morris

There are no figures available for May 1997.

The number of five, six and seven-year olds in infant classes of more than 30 pupils in Gloucestershire fell from 5,001 in January 1998 to 4,418 in 1999; a reduction from 26.7 per cent. to 23.2 per cent. The average class size at Key Stage 1 also fell from 26.8 to 26.6 during the same period.

A further substantial fall is expected in September 1999 following the allocation of £804,000 revenue funding and £629,000 capital investment in 1999–2000.

Mr. Nigel Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will list those Gloucestershire schools where infant classes contain more than 30 pupils. [93151]
