HC Deb 12 July 1999 vol 335 c58W
Mr. Maples

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he has made of the future stability of the Korean peninsula. [90138]

Mr. Hoon

Prospects for stability depend on North Korean readiness to work with the international community to overcome contentious issues. We continue to support South Korea's policy of engagement as a way of encouraging North Korean co-operation.

Mr. Maples

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Government of North Korea concerning routine international inspection of nuclear sites. [90139]

Mr. Hoon

The UK is concerned that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is not receiving full co-operation from North Korea. We frequently make clear our views to North Korea, most recently in statements together with our EU partners at the June IAEA Board of Governors and the May Preparatory Committee for the 2000 Review Conference of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. We will continue to do so.
