HC Deb 25 January 1999 vol 324 c44W
Mr. Jenkin

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, pursuant to paragraph 2.3 of the White Paper, "A New Deal for Transport", what indicators he proposes to publish in order to measure progress towards a transport system(a) which supports more jobs and a strong economy, (b) which helps increase prosperity and tackles social exclusion, (c) which does not damage health and (e) is sustainable. Ms Glenda Jackson

Last year we published our first "Transport Trends" report containing key indicators relevant to many of the objectives set out in the White Paper. We will continue to publish these reports each year so that progress against key indicators can be monitored. The indicators will be developed to include breakdowns by income groups, rural and urban areas and by age and gender so that we can monitor the impact of policies in tackling social exclusion. We will carry out the further work needed to ensure that the range of published indicators is appropriate, seeking advice from the independent Commission for Integrated Transport which is being set up to monitor and advise on progress towards our objectives.
