HC Deb 22 February 1999 vol 326 c177W
Mr. Swayne

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what assessment he has made of the potential implications for(a) public health and (b) traffic on the M4 of the burning of underground spoil at Grovesend. [71295]

Mr. Hain

Responsibility for the health of the population of the area around Grovesend lies primarily with Morgannwg Health Authority. I understand that both the Health Authority and Swansea County Council have been monitoring and assessing the implications of underground burning of the tip at Grovesend.

The traffic position has been discussed with the police and local authorities in the area and resources have been made available to establish extra road signs, which will be erected shortly. A diversionary route has also been discussed and proposals for signing this have been put to

1It should be noted that data may underestimate the true position as some non-medical staff (1.5 per cent. in 1995, 0.3 per cent. in 1997 and 0.2 per cent. in 1998) did not have a valid occupation code and have not, therefore, been assigned centrally to a staff group or grade.
2Some staff in this group were erroneously included with administrative and estates staff during 1996.

Following the transfer of functions, this issue will be a matter for the National Assembly.
