Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, pursuant to his answer of 15 February 1999,Official Report, columns 439–40, what representations he, or the Highways Agency, has received concerning the siting of individual signs. [72625]

Ms Glenda Jackson

I have asked the Chief Executive of the Highways Agency, Mr. Lawrie Haynes, to write to the hon. Member.

Letter from Lawrie Haynes to Mr. Paul Burstow, dated 22 February 1999: The Minister for Transport, Glenda Jackson has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question asking about the representations which we or the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions had received, in respect of the siting of individual direction signs under the London Primary Route network Signing project. Over 900 signs have been replaced since work began and we have received only 13 representations, mainly from local residents, about the siting of six of them. Of these, two duplicated representations were sent to the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. They include those that the London Borough of Sutton, a local Councillor and yourself made on behalf of one of your constituents. The representations have focused on peoples concerns about replacement direction signs being erected nearer their property. As a result of the representations, one sign has been moved and consideration is being given to the location of two other signs.
