To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many Key Stage 1 pupils were in classes with more than 30 pupils in each of the last five years. [71298]

Mr. Hain

As I informed the hon. Member in my replies of 3 February 1999,Official Report, column 609, and 10 February 1999, Official Report, column 250, information on the number of pupils in classes of 30 or more was not collected before 1998. In January 1998, 30,734 Key Stage 1 pupils were in classes of over 30 pupils.

Following the transfer of powers, this issue will be a matter for the National Assembly.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what the average class size is in the Bridgend County Borough; and what it was in May 1997. [71294]

Mr. Hain

The latest available information shows that the average class size of registered classes in primary schools in Bridgend County Borough Council was 28.7 as at January 1998. Comparable information is not available for May 1997.

Following the transfer of powers, this issue will be a matter for the National Assembly.
