HC Deb 11 February 1999 vol 325 c375W
Mr. Malcolm Bruce

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what estimate he has made of total capital investment in Scotland's schools for(a) 1997–98, (b) 1998–99, (c) 1999–2000, (d) 2000–01 and (e) 2001–02; and if he will make a statement. [70355]

Mrs. Liddell

From returns made by local authorities to The Scottish Office, the estimated capital expenditure on schools in 1997–98 was £120.799 million and the forecast figure for 1998–99 is £166.881 million. Estimates for the later years are not collected centrally. However, following the Comprehensive Spending Review, the Government expect further additional expenditure by authorities on school buildings amounting to £185 million over the three years from April 1999. School Public/ Private Partnership projects with a capital value of almost £400 million are being supported in nine authorities. From 1 July 1999 this will be a matter for the Scottish Parliament.
