To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many cataract operations were carried out in 1998 in north-east Wales; and if he will make a statement. [69541]

Data for 1998 are not yet complete. There were 2,833 cataract operations performed in hospitals situated in north-east Wales (Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham Unitary Authorities) during 1997.

Following the transfer of powers this issue will be a matter for the National Assembly.
