HC Deb 09 February 1999 vol 325 c144W
Ms Moran

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will introduce a mandatory life ban on driving for those guilty of causing road deaths. [68262]

Mr. Boateng

Disqualification from driving is obligatory where a driver is convicted of causing death by dangerous driving or causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. The period is, however, currently a matter for the courts discretion. The Government keep all penalties under review but have no plans currently to impose a mandatory life ban.
